Social Activism & Environment: Decades-Long Legal Crusade Frees Acres of Public Land at SKMCH
While massive government projects often make headlines, the relentless efforts of individual social activists are yielding incredible results for Muzaffarpur’s public infrastructure. Environmentalist and social crusader Vikas Chandra, widely known as ‘Guddu Baba’, has successfully concluded a series of Public Interest Litigations (PILs) that have directly benefited the city.
Originally starting his crusade to clean the Burhi Gandak and Ganga rivers, his legal battles expanded into tackling the illegal encroachment of public properties by land mafias. Thanks to his persistent legal follow-ups at the Patna High Court, over 10 acres of highly valuable, illegally occupied land belonging to the Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur have been successfully reclaimed by the state. This freed-up land is now crucial for the hospital’s ongoing expansion projects. His work serves as a powerful reminder of how dedicated civic engagement and the judicial system can work together to protect public assets and the environment.
